Washington Spirit and Utah Royals play to scoreless draw

A crowd of 2,430 fans packed the Maryland SoccerPlex on Wednesday night for Washington Spirit’s contest against the Utah Royals. Two minutes in the game was delayed due to lightning and everyone had to wait two hours until action was resumed. When play started back up, Ashley Hatch nearly got a chance in the fourth minute before her shot was blocked.

The Spirit kept up the pressure in the first half. After Elise Kellond-Knight was given a yellow card, the Spirit retained control of the ball and got a corner in the ninth minute but couldn’t get it through. They had another chance in the 43rd minute but Paige Nielsen’s shot went over the crossbar.

Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe kept them in the game with a couple big saves in the second half. On the other end, the offense generated 12 shots.

The draw puts the Spirit in seventh place as they are still looking for their first win since July 24. They’ll take on the Orlando Pride on Saturday night at Audi Field at 7:30 p.m.
