Washington Redskins vs. Houston Texans Preview

redskinsEntering his third season as the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins, Robert Griffin, III has the weight of the world on his shoulders when he takes the field Sunday against the Houston Texans.

Griffin, who led the Redskins to the playoffs in 2012, has struggled with injuries throughout his first two seasons. In addition to the injuries, Griffin had to deal with a tumultuous relationship with former head coach Mike Shanahan, who benched Griffin for the last three games of the 2013 season.

As the Redskins approach week one, they do so with a new head coach, Jay Gruden, the former offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals, who brings a new offense and style to DC. Gruden has made it clear that Griffin is his quarterback and will teach the former Heisman Trophy winner to be a pocket passer in his West Coast scheme.

Griffin will have the weapons around him to be successful. Running Back Alfred Morris leads a vaunted rushing attack that finished second in the league in rushing last season. The receiving corps of Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson, and tight end Jordan Reed are a combination of size and speed that rival any other group in the NFL.

The offense will face a formidable challenge Sunday against the Texans. Defensive Ends JJ Watt, 31 sacks over the past two seasons, and the number one overall pick in this year’s draft, Jadeveon Clowney, look to put the pressure on Griffin and the offensive line.

The Texans have many questions on offense, starting with the quarterback position. The team traded Matt Shaub to the Oakland Raiders in the offseason and signed free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick leads an offense full of potential, if it can stay healthy. Running Back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson, both all-pros, return from an injury-plagued 2013 season.

The Texans will also have a first-time NFL head coach on their sideline Sunday afternoon. Bill O’Brien was hired in the offseason after the team fired Gary Kubiak in December.

The last time the two teams met was the 2010 season in Washington. The Texans defeated the Redskins 30-27 in overtime.
