Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Recap 6/30/2018

The Washington Nationals lost to the Philadelphia Phillies three to two.  The Phillies lead the series two games to one.

This game was a multi-pitcher’s duel between the two teams. The starters were Jeremy Hellickson for the Nationals and Vince Velasquez for the Phillies. Hellickson went 4 2/3 innings for the nationals allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, and 4 K’s. Velasquez only lasted two innings before taking a line drive off of his elbow. Victor Arano entered the game in relief.

 

Spencer Kieboom started the scoring of the game with a double to deep center which scored speedy Wilmer Difo. The Phillies quickly recovered in the next inning though. Odubel Herrera hit a solo homerun to tie the game. Shortly after in the 4th inning, catcher Jorge Alfaro hit a double into left field which scored Jesmuel Valentin to take the lead 2-1. The Phillies extended the scoring in the 4th when pinch hitter Aaron Altherr doubled to left field scoring Alfaro. Going into the 6th inning Philadelphia was leading 3-1. Anthony Rendon changed that with a solo bomb to left field, which closed the gap to 3-2. Unfortunately, the scoring ended there as the Phillies were able to hold off the Nats scoring opportunities.

 

The Nationals ended the night with 8 hits and 9 strikeouts. The Phillies tallied 7 hits and 8 strikeouts. Tomorrow we will see a pitching matchup between Gio Gonzalez for Washington and Jake Arrieta for Philly.
