Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets Recap: March 10, 2019

The Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 at home on Sunday Night. This is their seventh straight win and the first for Pheonix Copley in a week.

The Caps move up to 41-21-7 and extend their Metropolitan Division lead over the Islanders with 89 points to New York’s 85. They are also 9-1-0 over their last ten games, with their last loss coming against Buffalo 5-2 on February 23. Winnipeg still leads the Central Division, with 84 points.

The two division leaders played a strong and competitive game. Braden Holtby decided to take a rest after a historic run seeing him reach 250 wins andtying the franchise record for shutouts. Copley was no slouch, though, making 37 saves on 38 shots. Matheiu Perreault scored the lone Winnipeg goal with 6:23 left in the first to tie the game 1-1.

In the later periods, the Caps came roaring back. Carl Hagelin scored with 14:32 in the second period on a miracle goal, assisted by Nic Dowd. For the second game in a row, Lars Eller added to the score with an Empty Net Goal 19:38 into the third. The high powered Caps offense fueled by the new and old faces gives the team legitimate strength as they seek to defend their title.

A two-game road trip to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia is coming soon. Every point counts as seeding becomes more important in later rounds.
