Washington Capitals sign KHL’s Sergei Shumakov, creates roster shake up

Sergei Shumakov, a 25 year old forward, has signed a one year contract worth $925,000. Sergei finished 18th in KHL scoring last season with Moscow. Shumakov put up a total of 40 points (17 goals and 23 assists) in 47 games.

Moscow was looking to find a trade partner with other KHL clubs, however when that failed he was released, making him a free agent yesterday (8/27/18)

The Capitals add another talented winger to their already deep forward position. The Caps have a full roster of players returning to defend the Stanley Cup, besides Jay Beagle who was a center. Shumakov is a crafty stickhandler and goal-scorer. Sergei could easily fill the role on the third line with Andre Burakovsky and centerman Lars Eller.

My projected lineup for the Washington Capitals:

Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Wilson
Vrana, Backstrom, Oshie
Burakovsky, Eller, Shumakov
Connolly, Stephenson, DSP
(Dowd the extra forward, putting Gersich, Boyd and Walker in the AHL)
