Washington Capitals Defeat Dallas Stars 4-3

The Washington Capitals bounced back after a tough loss on Sunday beating the Dallas Stars tonight 4-3. Braden Holtby looked like the Holtbeast we have seen earlier this year making 24 saves.

This was a very tough win to get tonight playing a good west coast team who is battling for a playoff spot. The Dallas Stars are one of NHL’s top scoring teams.

The Capitals fell behind early into the game after Tyler Seguin gave the Stars a 1-0 lead scoring with only two minutes left in the first period. Within minutes into the second period the Caps and TJ Oshie bounced back after Oshie made a finesse move beating a Stars defensemen after getting a pass from Lars Eller.

Later in the second period Matt Niskanen threw a basic wrist shot from the point that caught Stars goalie Karri Lehtonen off guard making giving the Caps a 2-1 lead. Minutes later Alexander Rodulov of the Stars beat Braden Holtby while short handed.

Moments later Alex Ovechkin did what he does best and that was ripping a slap shot from his spot while on the power play giving the Caps a 3-2 lead. That goal was Ovechkin’s 44 goal of the season, and could possibly hit 55 for the season. Right before the period ended Stars captain Jammie Benn beat Holtby to make it a tied game going into the third period.

The third period was very physical, and almost had a confrontation between Brooks Orpik and Radek Faksa. The Caps fought hard and put shots on net until Team USA own John Carlson beat Lehtonen glove side for a Caps 4-3 lead that won them the game.

Biggest takeaway from this game is the Caps proved to win a playoff pace game. Not only that, but they proved they can win without superstar center Evgeny Kuznetsov. Capital players didn’t shy away from hits, they played hard in front of the net and players stood up for each other during scrums after the whistle.

This looked like a team who wants to play for each other, and showed the grit they have been missing all year to make a long playoff run. The Caps play next on Wednesday against the Detroit Redwings.
