Washington Capitals begin cup defense as training camp opens Thursday

The Washington Capitals prospects had a head start on the season with a mini showcase tournament in Florida where the young guns went 2-1. That tournament has come and gone, but the main stay of the 2017-18 Stanley Cup Champions begin camp Thursday morning at MedStar Iceplex in Arlington Virginia.

Players have already been filing in and on the ice for informal skating at MedStar IcePlex in preparation for the opening of NHL training camp for the Capitals. The first on ice session will be Friday morning. There will need to be quick preparation however for the Capitals as they play the Boston Bruins on Sunday afternoon in both teams first preseason game of the 2018 season.

Players on the bubble to watch are Shane Gersich, Travis Boyd, Nathan Walker, Madison Bowey, Aaron Ness, and KHL signee Sergei Shumakov. The majority of the Capitals roster is returning. Center Jay Beagle, and goaltender Phillip Grubauer are the two big players to replace this season.

Braden Holtby is ready to rock. After a regular season that was a roller coaster ride at best, Braden stepped up in the playoffs including making the “save of the year” on route to winning the Stanley Cup!
