USMNT Striker Josh Sargent Scores In Bundesliga Debut

Not only did Josh Sargent score but he scored within two minutes of stepping foot on the pitch. The 18 year-old United States Striker made his long awaited debut for Werder Bremen on Friday in a 3-1 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf. The goal came from a cross by Davy Klaassen that found the foot of Martin Harnik but the keeper was there to make a great instinctual save that sent the ball flying in front of goal where Sargent was positioned perfectly to head it in.

This is just a continuation of his stellar performance with Werder Bremen’s second team where he scored 7 goals in 12 matches.

Coincidentally, Sargent also scored on his debut with the USMNT in a match against Bolivia where they secured a 2-0 victory. His 56% goal per game rate, during his US national career (youth squads included), is something to really be excited about for a USMNT fan. In 44 games with the U-17 squad he scored 25 goals. Then scoring 4 goals in 5 games for the U-20 side. Not long after that he finally got called up to the senior squad where, so far, he has scored 2 goals in 6 games.

Despite such early success, Bremen Head Coach Florian Kohfeldt knows Sargent still has some developing to do. Bundesliga.com spoke to Kohfeldt who said, “It’s not the beginning of being in the starting XI of even the squad every week. We do it step-by-step and I’m glad that he’s patient as well.” This is great news for US national team fans because Werder Bremen seem to be invested in Sargent’s development, which could have implications for the USMNT’s run in the 2026 World Cup.

With Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie being considered two of soccer’s best young stars, adding a striker like Sargent to the US’s permanent starting XI would certainly help in righting the ship.
