United out of US Open Cup
D.C. United lost to New York City Football Club 2-1 at home on Wednesday night. In this defeat, they are now eliminated from the US Open Cup, North America’s oldest soccer competition. While NYC goes on to the quarterfinals for the first time ever, the Black-and-Red must now sit back and start practicing for the ongoing MLS season.
The game started promisingly enough, with Wayne Rooney’s goal in the 32nd minute scoring in clean fashion. However, the Pigeons were quick to rebound. Alexandru Mitrata scored the equalizer six minutes later, and Ismael Tajouri put NYC up for good just before halftime. Rooney had a chance again in the 72nd minute, but his kick went wide, and the Black-and-Red proceeded to lose. A tough loss overall should not diminish a strong performance in this tournament and a great team effort from everyone. The best efforts just did not pan out on this night.
D.C. United is still winless overall against NYCFC this season, with an overall record of 0-1-2. NYCFC has never advanced to the quarterfinals in their history. United won the Cup last in 2013, but have not come close since. Though the matches within the Cup do not count towards MLS league standings. So United still looks to be in good shape as the MLS season goes on.
