Towson Tigers vs. Richmond Spiders Game Preview

The Richmond Spiders (3-2, 1-1) make the trip up north this weekend to take on the Towson Tigers (2-3, 0-2) on Saturday. Coming off a 24-9 home loss against Villanova and a bye week, the Tigers will be seeking their first win in conference play and could put their season on the right track with a victory against the Spiders.

Three Keys to the Game:

  1. No Bye Week Blues: In the Rob Ambrose era of Towson football, the Tigers have shown that they can be successful when coming off a bye week, posting a 5-3 record. However last season, the Tigers faced the Spiders coming off their bye and ended up losing the game by three points, although they played well.
  2. Tiger Opportunistic Defense: Towson forced four turnovers against the Villanova Wildcats and in their two home games this season, the Tigers have forced seven turnovers. The Tigers’ pass defense will be tested as the Spiders have the top passing offense in the CAA, averaging 404.6 yards per game. If the defense can hold true to their 178.2 passing yards allowed per game, and continue to be opportunistic, they can set up the offense with short fields, that can allow Towson to convert on some easy scoring.
  3. Get Simpson Going: The Sophomore running back has had a very slow and disappointing start to the 2017 campaign but, last year Simpson had success against the Spiders. In their last meeting, Simpson was able to find daylight, posting 106 rushing yards on 12 carries.

My Prediction: Close game but ultimately Richmond finds a way to pull it out, winning by a score of 27-24.

Kickoff is at 4:00 PM this Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium
