Towson head coach Rob Ambrose will not be returning in 2023

The Towson Tigers football team will have a new head coach for the 2023 season as long time head coach Rob Ambrose will not be return, the school announced this week. Ambrose a former Towson Alumni was the Tigers head coach for 13 years.

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University athletics department has announced that Rob Ambrose will not return as head coach of Towson football next season. Effective immediately, special teams coordinator Lyndon Johnson will serve as interim head coach.
 
A national search for a new head football coach will begin immediately. 
 
“After completely assessing our program, the decision has been made to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team,” said Director of Athletics Steve Eigenbrot. “I am grateful for Coach Ambrose’s hard work and dedication to his alma mater. We wish him and his family all the best in their next chapter. Our program will be in good hands with Lyndon Johnson as the interim head coach as we embark to find the next leader of Towson Tiger Football.”
 
The Tigers will conduct a search for just the fifth head coach in program history.
 
“The search starts today for us to find a new head coach for our football program,” Eigenbrot said. “Towson University is committed to providing an excellent experience for our student-athletes and the football program is no exception. We have high quality facilities, a strong support infrastructure and a track record of success. Our next leader will bring new energy and excitement to this fanbase, and we look forward to them leading us back to the postseason.” 
 
A 1993 Towson University graduate, Ambrose served as Towson head coach for 13 seasons from 2009-22 (Tigers did not play in fall 2020-spring 2021 season). He was a Tigers assistant from 1992-2000 and played for the Tigers from 1989-91. The fourth head coach in Tigers history, Ambrose spent a total of 26 years with the program. 
 
As head coach, Ambrose led the Tigers to a 76-76 record, including 2011 and 2012 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. In 2013, Towson finished 13-3 and earned a trip to the FCS title game. Towson appeared in the FCS playoffs in 2011, 2013 and 2018 under Ambrose.
