Tides make it a Comeback

Down 6-2 in the fourth inning of Tuesday night’s game, the Norfolk Tides scored seven unanswered runs to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 9-6 in 10 innings.

Josh Stinson, Norfolk’s starter, pitched just 2.2 innings Tuesday night giving up five runs on seven hits. Stinson was replaced by Randy Wolf who pitched 2.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits. When Wolf exited the game in the fourth, Norfolk was down 6-2.

The Tides picked up two runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, Steve Clevenger grounded into a force out at second base but a throwing error was made to first which allowed Jemile Weeks and Francisco Peguero both to score.

The Tides would be held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. The Tides would score three runs in the inning, cutting the lead to 6-5.

Francisco Peguero lined a double down the right-field line and Quiten Berry came around to score when Shane Victorino, on MLB Rehab assignment, made a throwing error. Steve Clevenger hit a ground rule double, the second double of the inning, scoring Peguero for the second run of the inning. The next batter, Ivan De Jesus, singled which allowed Clevenger to come around and score for the third run.

The Tides picked up another run in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game 6-6. Cord Phelps hit a triple to centerfield with one down in the inning. Phelps scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Brian Ward.

Neither team was able to score in the ninth inning so the game went to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Tides picked up three runs. With one out, Ivan De Jesus was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter, Cord Phelps, was unintentionally walked and gave the Tides a 7-6 lead.

Brian Ward singled the next at bat scoring Julio Borbon and Ivan De Jesus, making the Tides’ lead 9-6. Going into the bottom half of the inning, Norfolk’s pitching staff had thrown five consecutive innings of scoreless ball.

And they would make it six innings. After a leadoff double and a single with no outs, Clay Rapada replaced Ramon Ramirez. Rapada came into the game, struck the first batter out and got the next batter to ground into a game ending double play. Rapada picked up his first save for the Tides as Ramirez picked up his first win.

With the huge win Tuesday night, the Tides will try to take the middle game of a three-game series against Pawtucket Wednesday night. Nick Addition (3-2 3.41) will get the start for the Tides as Anthony Ranaudo (7-4 2.58) will be the starter for the Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 in Pawtucket.
