Terrapin Forward Jake Layman Out 4-6 Weeks with Hand Injury
Maryland Terrapin junior forward Jake Layman is now expected to miss four to six weeks due to fracturing a bone in his left hand earlier this month. He however is expected to recover fully by the time the team begins practicing for the season.
Layman apparently injured the hand during a pickup game during the offseason. This appears to be an injury that will not hold the forward back to much in the upcoming season as he will be looked upon to be a major part in the Terrapins game plans in their first year in the Big Ten basketball.
Along with Dez Wells, Layman will be looked upon by the coaching staff to be one of their main leaders on the court and it appears he has taken it in stride as he tweeted some of his thoughts after the string of transfer the Terrapin basketball team suffered at the beginning of the offseason “Excited for whats to come next. Surrounded by a bunch of guys and a great staff that want to work hard to reach 1 common goal.”, as well as saying “-This program cares so much about all of the players and I know were going to have a great season coming up”.
Expect Layman to play an even more integral role on the team as well as continue to raise his scoring to above his last season mark of 11.7 points per game as well as 5.0 rebounds per game. With his ability to shoot and his surprising athletic ability Layman draws a lot of comparisons to current Utah Jazz and former Butler forward Gordon Hayward.
Even though Layman will miss summer workouts he will be back in plenty of time for the start of the season. Layman is also not the first Terp basketball player to suffer an injury this offseason as freshman big man Trayvon Reed went down after he fractured his ankle. The Terrapins must hope they are able to get the injury bug out of their system before the season starts if they wish to contend in the new Big Ten.
