Survive and Advance: Terps Beat Cornell in Thriller

The NCAA Tournament is the most exciting time of the year in any collegiate sport. Maryland and Cornell showed why on Saturday afternoon, as the Terps scored with 2 seconds left to defeat the Big Red 8-7.

Cornell got off to a quick start, as the Big Red scored four unanswered goals to get a quick lead. Mike Chanenchuk scored Maryland’s first goal in the middle of the second quarter, but that is all the Terps could get in the first half. Christian Knight (Boys’ Latin) was outstanding in goal for the Big Red. They took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

The Terps came out on fire to start the second half. Jay Carlson (St. Paul’s), Matt Rambo, and Connor Cannizzaro all netted goals to cut the Cornell lead to 5-4 midway through the third quarter. Cornell responded with a quick goal to take a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter. This is where the fun began.

Rambo notched his second of the game to cut the lead back to one, but Dan Lintner answered for the Big Red to make it 7-5. Rambo then notched the hat trick, scoring his third of the day to cut it back to one once again. Cannizzaro then notched his second of the day to tie the game up at seven. It was the first time that Cornell did not have the lead since the early first quarter.

The game then went back and forth, with both teams having opportunities. Knight and his counterpart Niko Amato came up with some big saves for both teams. Maryland got the last possession with around one minute left in regulation.

With less than 10 seconds and the timer on, Henry West, a transfer from Cornell, attacked the goal and drew a double team. Cornell’s defense was confused for a split second, and it was just enough for West to set up Chanenchuk, who beat Knight for the game winner with a mere two seconds on the clock.

Charlie Raffa was 11-17 on faceoffs, and Amato made eight saves. Maryland will take on either Syracuse or Bryant next weekend.
