Student-Athlete Spotlight: Meet Zach Belsinger

Meet Zach Belsinger.  Currently, he is one of the kickers on the 3-0 Fallston Cougars High School football team.  They play rival North Harford today, Friday, September 22nd to see if they can retain a perfect record.

Zach has been a part of sports since he was four years old! Football and soccer were  the first sports that he learned how to play.  He has also played tee-ball, been on a bowling league that placed 2nd when he was seven and JV lacrosse.

He also happens to be a pretty darn good student as well, with a GPA of 3.25.  Zach says that his favorite subjects are math, science and “of course, gym.”  Zach also enjoys fishing, playing basketball with his friends, going to the movies and playing X-box.  If you visit Jurassic Golf & Arcade in Bel Air, you might find Zach working there.

In addition to all of this, Zach is also a four-year member of the Fallston High School marching band.  He currently plays the tenor sax.  He also has been active in helping out others in the community.

Back in the fifth grade, Zach donated a full shoe-box of his own money to children battling cancer.  His mom, Robin, said it was more than $300.  When he was a sophomore, Zach was a goalie trainer to a group of children under the age of 8, get ready for the Maryland United Football Club.

I asked Zach what his most memorable sports moment has been so far in his life. He said, “My most memorable experience was saving penalty kicks in a soccer tournament to move to the championship game and then winning the championship.  I played for the Maryland Football United Football Club soccer team when this happened.”

Upon graduation, Zach hopes to attend Loyola University and play either soccer or lacrosse.  Another reason he wants to go there is his father, Matt, is an alumni there.  He also said he may just want to concentrate on his academic studies.  From what it appears, I say he is a person that could do both!

If you have a student athlete that you would like to see highlighted on Marylandsportsblog.com, please feel free to reach me at frederick.seltzer@gmail.com and tell me about the accomplishments of that student.  I am looking for those students who have at least a 3.0 GPA, currently play a sport at their high school and are active in their community.

Served in the US Navy as a journalist between 2/25/1991 & 9/15/1993. My duty station was Naval Submarine Base, Bangor in Silverdale, Washington. I was one of the writers for the weekly publication, "Trident Tides." While there, I successfully started the first-ever coverage of sports on and off the base to much positive response. When it comes to sports, I either play it, watch it and/or write about it. I'm always open to suggestions and hope you enjoy what I write about.
