Series Preview: Tigers vs. Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles finish up their ten game home stand with a three game series against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers come into town off a series loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates and sit at 10-13 for the season. The Orioles continue to struggle, losing their last five contests and nine of their last ten. Let’s take a look at this weekend’s pitching matchups:

 

Game One: Mike Fiers (2-1, 3.71 ERA) vs. Chris Tillman (0-4, 9.87 ERA)

Mike Fiers will get the ball for the Detroit Tigers in the series opener Friday night. In his last start, Fiers went 5.1 innings while allowing four runs (two earned) against the Kansas City Royals. Fiers has faced the Orioles twice in his career, and allowed one run over seven innings in each one. Pedro Álvarez and Danny Valencia both have two home runs off of Fiers in their careers.

 

Christ Tillman will take the mound for the Orioles in the series opener. Tillman went six innings and allowed four runs in his latest start against the Cleveland Indians while picking up another loss. In ten starts against the Tigers over his career, Tillman holds a 6-1 record with a 3.12 ERA over 60.2 innings. Leonys Martin holds a .333 average against Tillman and a home run in 12 at-bats.

 

Game Two: Francisco Liriano (2-1, 3.13 ERA) vs. Andrew Cashner (1-3, 3.60 ERA)

Francisco Lirano will get the start for the Tigers in the middle game of the series on Saturday. In his last start, loran went 5.1 innings while allowing three runs and striking out six against the Royals. Liriano faced the Orioles on April 17 and allowed two runs over five innings. Trey Mancini and Chris Davis have home runs against Liriano in their careers.

 

Andrew Cashner will get the ball for the Orioles on Saturday night. Cashner went six innings while allowing four runs and striking out seven against the Indians on Sunday. Cashner fared well against the Tigers two weeks ago, lasting six innings while allowing three runs. Victor Martinez has a .400 average against Cashner with a home run and two RBI.

 

Game Three: Daniel Norris (0-1, 4.85 ERA) vs. Kevin Gausman (1-2, 4.66 ERA)

Daniel Norris will toe the rubber on Sunday for the series finale. Norris has made only one start in 2018, going 4.2 innings while allowing one run against the Royals. Norris has a career 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings against the Orioles in his career. Chris Davis has one home run against Norris.

 

Kevin Gausman will get the start in the series finale against the Tigers on Sunday. Gausman is coming off his best start of the season, going eight innings while allowing two runs against the Indians. Gausman pitched well against the Tigers on April 18, allowing two runs over six innings. Miguel Cabrera has a home run and four RBI against Gausman in his career.

 

The Orioles are off to one of their worst starts in recent memory, and currently sit one game ahead of the worst record in baseball. The Orioles were swept in a three game series by the Tigers earlier this season.
