Mountcastle named International League Player of the Week

Norfolk Tides first baseman and Baltimore Orioles prospect, Ryan Mountcastle, has been named the Player of the Week for the International League. Mountcastle, who is ranked as the organization’s number two prospect by MLB.com, had quite the stat line last week, batting .370 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs, 8 runs, 24 total bases and an .889 slugging percentage. Mountcastle had four games in which he had multiple hits. He hit home runs in each of those four games. On the season, the 22-year-old right-handed slugger is batting .289 with 4 home runs and 17 RBI.

The Orioles drafted Mountcastle out of Paul J. Hagerty High School in Oviedo, FL, with the 36th pick in the 2015 draft. Originally drafted as a shortstop, he has spent time at third base, as well, as the Orioles look for a way to get his advanced bat to the major leagues. In his four plus seasons in the Orioles’ minor league system, Mountcastle has shown a good combination of power and average, hitting 49 home runs and batting .289.
