Rough day for DC United

DC United is in the mist of a remarkable bounce back season, leading the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-4-4 for 25 points, giving fans a lot to cheer about so far this year. Unfortunately, today was not a day for cheer.

First came news that standout forward Fabian Espindola would be out for six weeks with a strained MCL. Espindola was injured early in Wednesday’s match with Montreal. Despite the injury, Espindola still assisted on three of the four goals scored by DC United before exiting at the half.

With seven goals and eight assists, Espindola has played a very large role in United’s turnaround from last years awful campaign. Espindola has settled into his role with the club much quicker than fellow newcomer Eddie Johnson and has really been the offensive catalyst this year. His absence will certainly be noticed and will require the rest of the squad to step up if DC United hope to continue to stay atop the Eastern Conference table.

The only bright spot from last season was the winning of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Tonight DC United took to the pitch in Rochester, New York to defend their title against the Rochester Rhinos of the USL Pro division. In a much delayed match due to lightning, Rhinos forward Colin Rolfe scored the lone goal in the 27th minute ending DC United’s defense before it really even got started.

Tough day for United who will now look to get prepared for their next match against Western Conference leaders the Seattle Sounders on June 28th.
