Roster moves and jersey changes

On Monday, the Baltimore Orioles made a roster move claiming infielder Jack Reinheimer (REIN-heim-urr) off waivers. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Austin Brice was designated for assignment.

Reinheimer, 26, has bounced around different organizations this offseason. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs on November 2. Then, he was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers on November 20. Now, he joins the Orioles organization as added infield depth. He’s been added to the 40-man roster.

Initially drafted out of high school by the Atlanta Braves in the 31st round of the 2010 Amateur Draft, Reinheimer did not sign. Instead, he attended East Carolina University. While there, he earned Conference USA and College Baseball Daily All-Freshman team honors in 2011. He was also the Most Valuable Player in the New England Collegiate League the same year.

Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 5th round of the 2013 draft, Reinheimer was named to the Northwest League midseason All Star team. He was among leaders in hits (67), stolen bases (18) and walks (32).

Splitting time between Single-A Clinton and High-A High Desert the following season, he was named to the Midwest League midseason All Star team. In 130 games between the clubs, Reinheimer hit .276, with 22 doubles, five triples and three home runs.

In 2015, Reinheimer was packaged in a deal that sent Welington Castillo, Dominic Leone and Gabriel Guerrero to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, the Mariners received Mark Trumbo and pitcher Vidal Nuño. Plenty of Oriole names in that paragraph.

After a 2016 season with Triple-A Reno that saw Reinheimer hit .288 with 28 doubles, he was named to the PCL midseason All Star team. He was ranked as Arizona’s 10th best prospect after starting the season 12th on Baseball America’s list and 14th by MLB.com.

He appeared in just two games with the Diamondbacks in 2017 and spent most of his time at the Triple-A level. In 129 games with Triple-A Reno that season, he slashed .278/.341/.351 and knocked in 56. His 600th career minor league hit came on August 13th, 2017.

Reinheimer was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets on July 31, 2018. In 21 games last season, he split time between third base, left field, shortstop and second base while batting .167 (5-for-30) with five walks.

Jersey number changes

As Jon Meoli from The Baltimore Sun reported on Twitter, there are some different jersey numbers being listed on the official 40-man roster.

Rule-5 draft pick Richie Martin is now wearing number 1. Drew Jackson now has Jonathan Schoop’s number 6. Rio Ruiz is sporting number 14, most recently worn by Craig Gentry. Austin Hays is wearing 21, made popular by Nick Markakis.

DJ Stewart switches from 62 to 24. Hanser Alberto puts to rest the question of, “will Mike Mussina’s jersey number be retired?” He’s now wearing number 35. Branden Kline goes from 78 down to 52. Dillon Tate, acquired in the Zach Britton deal from the Yankees is now sporting number 55. And finally, Hunter Harvey will now be wearing number 56.
