Nunez stays hot, but Orioles fall to Giants 8-2: Game recap 6/1/19

The Orioles took the field this afternoon for the second game of this interleague series against the Giants.

David Hess got the start tonight, and his struggles continued. The Giants got to Hess early and often, scoring seven runs off the Orioles starter in four innings. This included one home run as part of the six hits he allowed.

The giants scored two off a Buster Posey single in the first, which gave them a 2-0 lead over the Orioles. Then in the third, the all too familiar long ball was given up by Hess, extending the Giants lead to 3-0.

In the fourth inning, Renato Nunez would smash his 15th home run of the season to cut the Orioles deficit to 3-1. Doesn’t that sound familiar?

In the last 10 games dating back to May 22 that Renato Nunez has played in, including today’s game, he has hit seven home runs. In that 10 game span, he had a four-game streak in which he hit a home run in each game, and another back-to-back games with a home run. He also has batted in 15 runs in this 10 game span.

The Giants would break the game open in the fifth, scoring three runs that were credited to Hess. Miguel Castro would come in relief and would allow one more sac fly that gave the Giants a 7-1 lead.

Despite the one run on the sac fly, Castro pitched very well, throwing a complete three innings and allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Austin Wynns would cut the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball single that scored Rio Ruiz.

Both offenses would be quiet until the top of the ninth, when the Giants tacked on an insurance run to take the final lead of 8-2.

David Hess took the loss today and moves to 1-7 on the year.

Catch the Orioles Sunday as they attempt to win this series in game three, with first pitch at 1:05 pm ET.
