REDSKINS TRADE ALERT: Redskins Acquire Case Keenum from the Denver Broncos

The Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos have agreed on a trade that would send quarterback Case Keenum and a 7th round draft pick to the Redskins in exchange for a 6th round pick, according to Ian Rapoport. A key facet of the deal revolves around a restructured contract. Keenum’s base pay in 2019 has been bumped up from 7.0 million to 7.5 million. The Broncos will pay 3.5 million of his salary, leaving the Redskins to pay the remaining 3.5 million dollars this year. In Keenum, the Redskins get their replacement for the injured Alex Smith, who might never be able to step on a football field again as a player. Smith, who broke his leg in the middle of the 2018 season, has saddled the Redskins with a giant contract that looks more and more like wasted money due to a horrific injury. Keenum replaces Smith and provides the Redskins with a slightly above average game manager that did not light the world on fire in Denver last season.   The trade is key for Washington, because it keeps them under the salary cap, which allows them to add a few more pieces in addition to their future draft picks.   The Redskins were rumored to be in talks with the Cardinals for quarterback Josh Rosen, but it seems that Rosen’s high asking price made the Redskins pivot towards Keenum.   The next move for the Redskins will come in free agency, as they look to rebuild their secondary and possibly strengthen their receiving core. Then they can look towards the draft.
