Round 2: Jason Verrett Cornerback TCU

Jason Verrett is phenomenal corner who could find himself falling into the second round due to his small frame (5’10 189 pounds), but the Redskins would be wise to not let him slip past pick 34. Verrett could contribute from day one and would likely be an upgrade over recently signed Tracy Porter in the slot corner position. Verrett could also be the long term answer for the Redskins at corner paired with second year pro David Amerson, because DeAngelo Hall can’t play forever. Verrett plays with a confidence and a swagger that doesn’t suggest he is 5’10, and doesn’t back down to anyone. I absolutely love the way he plays and his fit with the Redskins, ultimately if he does make it to the top of the second round, the Redskins could be a good fit for Verrrett.

Round 3: Deon Bucannon Safety Washington State

The Redskins recently signed safety Brandon Meriweather and Ryan Clark. However, neither is the long term solution for the Redskins at safety. Deon Bucannon could be that long term answer the Redskins have been searching for. Bucannon has good size at 6’1 211 pounds, and he uses all 211 pounds to punish ball carriers. Bucannon is an excellent tackler, and lead the team in tackles last season at Washington State. Bucannon paired with essentially another rookie in Phillip Thomas (missed his entire rookie season with injury) would give the redskins two talented safety’s to develop for the future.

Round 4: Christian Jones ILB Florida State

Christian Jones may be the most athletic Linebacker in this year’s draft class. Jones isn’t afraid to take on lead blocks and is great in coverage. Jones’ ability to drop back in coverage should greatly appeal to the Redskins, who don’t have a lot of depth at inside linebacker with the ability to drop back in coverage Jones has the potential to be developed into the Redskins long term inside linebacker beside Perry Riley. Jones would also be an asset to a special teams unit that was one of the worst in the NFL last season. The other think I like about Jones is his athletic ability gives him the skills to play all four linebacker spots, which would provide good depth for the Redskins.

Round 5: Cyril Richardson G Baylor

Cyril Richardson is a mammoth man standing at 6’5 340 pounds; the Baylor product has prior experience protecting RGIII which will be key to the team’s success in 2014. Richardson has to prove to the coaches of whichever team drafts him that he is ready to play; the guard has seen his draft stock fall which is why he may be available for the Redskins in a later round. Richardson could push starting guard Chris Chester for playing time, and would certainly add size to the offensive line which coach Jay Gruden has expressed a desire to do.

Round 6: Brandon Coleman WR Rutgers

Brandon Coleman could be the missing link to a much improved Redskins receiving core. The Redskins now have receivers to stretch the field in Garcon, Jackson, and Roberts. However, none of those receivers stands over 6 feet tall. Gruden preferred taller receivers in Cincinnati, and Coleman could provide the jump-ball redzone target the Redskins are lacking.

Round 7: Colt Lyerla TE Oregon

Redskins coach Jay Gruden loves to incorporate the tight end into his offense, he often used two tight ends in Cincinnati. Gruden will have a future superstar at his disposal in tight end Jordan Reed, but after Reed the Redskins lack a game changing tight end that Gruden desires. Colt Lyerla possesses all these qualities. He can change a game, and has drawn comparisons to Rob Gronkowski. So why is Lyerla available in the seventh round? Lyerla’s character has always been questioned, and he abruptly quit during his senior season in Oregon. Pairing Lyerla and DeSean Jackson in the same locker room might be a recipe for disaster. However, Lyerla’s talent might be too great for Gruden to pass up in the seventh round, and paired with Reed, Garcon, Jackson, and Roberts Lyerla could help the Redskins become one of the most dangerous offense’s in football.
