The Redskins have their workhorse running back in Alfred Morris. However, the depth chart after Morris is a bit of a mystery at this point.

With a new coaching staff in town, Alfred Morris should be the only back on Washington’s roster that feels good about his job security. Jay Gruden has a history of using two running backs, including a running back that can catch passes out of the backfield.

The closest fit to that type of running back currently on the roster is Roy Helu and Chris Thompson. However, Thompson has durability issues, and hasn’t quite shown he is the same electrifying player he was in college pre-injury. As for Helu, he is set to make more money this year than Morris, and his production over the past few seasons doesn’t match that salary.

Does this mean the Redskins will look to the draft to find the running back Gruden desires? It’s extremely possible. Last year not a single running back was selected in the first round, and that is likely to happen again this year. In 2013 the first running back to come off the board was Giovani Bernard number 37 overall drafted by Coach Jay Gruden and the Bengals.

With a limited number of picks is this May’s draft, the Redskins have to be smart with every pick, but if a player like Charles Sims falls to a mid to late round, the Redskins may jump on the opportunity to draft him.

Some may say that the Redskins have much more pressing needs than running back and it would be a waste of an already limited amount of picks to draft another running back (drafted two in 2013). That may not be the case, Sims is a very pro ready running back, and was called the best receiver on West Virginia’s entire roster last season, making him an ideal fit for what Gruden is looking for.

If Gruden is searching for an upgrade at running back, and Sims is available in the fourth round or later, he may just be the best player available, a strategy the Redskins would be wise to go by in this May’s draft. Sims could contribute immediately on third downs which would give him great value if he is indeed a later round pick.

Although known for his hands, Sims is a talented runner as well. Although he would probably contribute catching the ball out of the backfield first, Sims has the talent to be the number two running back and carry the ball to give Morris a much deserved rest.

Sims could join Alfred Morris as the latest late-round running back steal by the Redskins, and provide a dangerous backfield combination with Morris, adding another wrinkle to an already dangerous Redskins offense.
