Recap Of October 28th Men’s & Women’s CAC 1st Round Playoff Action

VARIOUS LOCATIONS – Both the 2017 Men’s Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Soccer Tournament and 2017 Women’s Captial Athletic Conference (CAC) Soccer Tournaments started with first round games that saw four Maryland Division III schools in action, here’s the results of those four matches.

#6 Frostburg State Bobcats at #3 Mary Washington Eagles – 2017 Men’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The #6 seed Frostburg State Bobcats traveled down to Virginia to face the #3 seed Mary Washington Eagles in the first round of the 2017 Men’s CAC Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, it was one game and done for the Bobcats as the fell, 3-1, to the Eagles.

Bobcats Junior M Alferid Kemal scored the only Bobcats goal.  For Mary Washington, Junior M/F Ryan Van Maanen had two goals and Junior F/M Justin Carey scored the other.  The Eagles out-shot the Bobcats 17-9 and held an 8-4 advantage with shots on goal.

Mary Washington will now travel to southern Maryland on Wednesday, November 1st when they play the #2 St. Mary’s Maryland Seahawks in the 2017 Men’s CAC Soccer Tournament Semi-Finals.  Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 pm.

#5 Mary Washington Eagles at #4 St. Mary’s Seahawks – 2017 Women’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round

SAINT MARY’S CITY, Md. – The 2017 Women’s CAC Soccer Tournament’s first round kicked off on Saturday afternoon when the #5 seed Mary Washington Eagles played at the #4 seed St. Mary’s Maryland Seahawks.  It was a one-sided affair.

Three different Seahawks scored a goal each (Senior M Kat Golladay, Freshman F/M Emmey German and Freshman F Haley Bullis) and Senior GK Sydney Larkin saved both shots on goal as St. Mary’s pitched a shutout against Mary Washington.  The Eagles only had seven shots for the entire game.

In the 2017 Women’s CAC Soccer Tournament Semi-Finals, #4 St. Mary’s travel to Newport News, Virginia and play #1 seed Christopher Newport Captains Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.

The Captains defeated the Seahawks, 2-0 back on October 11th.

#5 Salisbury Sea Gulls at #4 York (PA) Spartans – 2017 Men’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round

YORK, Pa. – It was a wild shoot-out at the end of the game between the #5 seed Salisbury Sea Gulls and the #4 seed York (PA) Spartans to see who would win in the 2017 Men’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round action Saturday afternoon.

A Sea Gulls penalty kick goal was made by Senior D Nick Carrington in the second half to tie the score at 1-1.  In the first half, the Spartans would get an early 1-0 lead on Junior F Nathan Bible’s goal.

After 110 minutes, the score ended with a 1-1 tie.  But unlike the regular season, the game doesn’t end there.  It goes to penalty kicks to determine who wins and advances in the tournament.  The rules say whichever team is leading after the 5th round (each team takes alternating turns with the penalty kicks) wins the match.  But, if the score is tied after each time has taken their five shots, it will continue until one teams makes a shot and the other misses one in the same round.  This shoot-out would go to the 10th round before a winner was determined.

In the first round, Bible missed his penalty kick shot but Carrington scored once again on his to give the Sea Gulls an early 1-0 lead.

Misses by Sea Gulls Sophomore M Dolph Hegewisch and Sophomore M Alex Eiben in the 2nd and 4th rounds combined with a Spartan miss in the 4th round by Freshman M Ethan Lloyd and the score was tied up going into the 5th round, 2-2.

Each team would make their kicks in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th rounds to keep it going.

Starting the 10th round, St. Mary’s Junior GK Trevor Brookhart (who had made nine saves at this point) would use his leg and not his hands as he scored on his penalty kick.  He would then take the net as Spartans Freshman M Aiden Wisley stepped up to take his shot.  Brookhart stopped the ball before it could get past him and Salisbury won the match and advances on.

Salisbury’s reward for this hard fought victory is a Wednesday match-up at Newport News, Virginia when they take on the #1 seed Christopher Newport Captains at 5:00 pm.

Just 10 days ago, Salisbury and Christopher Newport played to, ironically, a 1-1 (2OT) tie.

#6 Penn State/Harrisburg Nittany Lions at #3 Salisbury Sea Gulls – 2017 Women’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round

SALISBURY, Md. – Not to be outdone in the 2017 Women’s CAC Soccer Tournament 1st Round, the #3 seed Salisbury Sea Gulls defeated the #6 seed Penn State/Harrisburg Nittany Lions by the same score as fellow CAC playoff contender #4 seed St. Mary’s Seahawks defeated #5 Mary Washington, 3-0.

The Sea Gulls would get one goal each from Freshman M Brooke Russiter, Senior F Ruthie Lucas and Freshman B/M Juliana Looney.  Senior GK Hope Knussman recorded 10 saves in the victory.

When Salisbury travels to Frostburg to take on the #2 seed Frostburg State Bobcats on Wednesday, November 1st, the will be without Senior M/S Carliane LaGuerre, who recieved a red-card ejection at the 78:27 mark in the second half.  Rules state that the player who receives a red card and gets ejected from that game must miss the entire next game as well.

Kickoff right now is TBA and will be updated as soon as we receive it.
