Recap: Nationals Drop Spring Game to Cardinals 6-1

The Washington Nationals were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 6-1 on February 26th, 2019. With the loss, Washington drops to 2-2 in Spring play, while holding 12th place in the Grapefruit League. Newly acquired starter Anibal Sanchez made his Spring debut, as he threw two scoreless innings and struck out one batter.

To summarize, the Nationals opened the scoring from a wild pitch from reliever Chasen Shreve, which resulted in Michael A. Taylor scoring the games first run in the bottom of the 3rd. However, it would be St. Louis that would go on to dominate, scoring six unanswered runs to close out the game, including four in the top of the 4th. While the loss certainly hurts Washington, the Spring series is tied at 1-1, and the two teams are still schedueled to play five more games over the next month.

Next, the Nats will travel back home for a meeting with the Houston Astros on February 27th, 2019 at FITTeam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. Washington has yet to announce their starter for tomorrow’s game, but it will likely be Stephen Strasburg taking the hill. On the other hand, the Astros will call right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh to take the mound, making his 2019 debut.
