Recap: Nationals Defeat Cardinals, 7-1

The Washington Nationals held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-1 on Thursday in spring training action. The Nats’ record now stands at 16-10 The Cardinals’ drop to 10-15.

Jeremy Hellickson pitched a very strong five innings for Washington. Allowing 4 runs and 6 strikeouts while pitching. Kyle Barraclough a relief pitcher for the Nationals struggled while he had 4 walks and 1 run. Nationals closer Sean Doolittle came into the game and had 2 runs and 1 strikeout.

Offensively, the long ball ruled for Washington. Belting out three home runs out of the ballpark by Ryan Zimmerman, Brian Dozier each contributed one digger to the total. The bottom of the fourth inning had a lot of action as Brian Dozier hit a home run and Yan Gomez scored. In the bottom of the 7th inning, infielder Anthony Rendon singled to left and Adam Eaton and Trea Turner scored, while Juan Soto went to second base.

The Nationals will play the Miami Marlins tonight in Jupiter. Pitching for the Nationals, tonight is Max Scherzer.
