Ravens waive undrafted rookie tight end Jacob Breeland

One week after being placed on the non-football injury reserve list, rookie tight end Jacob Breeland has been waived by the Baltimore Ravens with the non-football injury designation. He signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon and has been trying to work his way back from a season-ending knee injury that cut his senior campaign short after just six games.

Breeland was off to an incredibly hot start for Ducks with six touchdowns and 405 yards on just 26 receptions before he went down on Oct.11 in a game against Colorado. Heading into training camp he was viewed as the leading candidate to win the third tight end spot on the Ravens’ depth chart behind starter that was vacated when former first-round pick Hayden Hurst was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in March.

The coronavirus pandemic has made the rehabilitation process for first-year players coming off of injuries that they suffered in their final collegiate seasons or while training a challenge because they were not allowed to be in team facilities. Breeland could’ve resumed football activities once he was medically cleared but is expected to miss the entire 2020 season.

As of now the competition for the final tight end spot behind starts Mark Andrews and Nick Boyle is between undrafted rookie Eli Wolf out of Georgia, 2019 undrafted free agent Charles Scarff and fifth-year veteran Jerell Adams who was signed on Monday.

However, the Ravens are still reportedly in the market to add an experienced veteran tight end to mix. Adams has just 24 catches for 214 yards and one touchdown in 30 career games with three different teams. Names like Delanie Walker, Ed Dickson, and Charles Clay have been mentioned as options on the team’s radar.
