Ravens report card: 10/21/2018

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the New Orleans Saints 24 to 23 in a game that the Ravens could have tied it late but Justin Tucker missed an extra point.

Quarterbacks: Joe Flacco played extremely well throwing for 279 and two touchdowns without an interception. Flacco completed 23 out of 39 passes which is not great but receivers had several drops as well. Lamar Jackson also completed a pass and scored a rushing touchdown, the first of his career. Grade A

Running Backs: Willie Snead had one run and was the Ravens second leading rusher. Alex Collins had 11 carries for 38 yards which is not great but certainly not terrible. Buck Allen was effective in the passing game with three receptions for 21 yards. Grade C

Receivers: John Brown had a great game with seven receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown. Brown caught each one of his targets which was more impressive. Michael Crabtree also had a solid game with five catches. Snead had three receptions but also had several drops, one drop was right in the numbers when he was wide open and had tons of room to run, drops like that can not happen. Grade B

Offensive Line: The Ravens were down two starting offensive lineman in Alex Lewis and James Hurst and still only gave up one sack. The run blocking continues to struggle and Flacco was under pressure on a lot of plays but this unit was solid. A few plays this unit gave Flacco a lot of time to throw. Grade B+

Overall Offense: The Ravens offense did not have many possessions but made the most of their opportunities. This unit was not the problem against the Saints. Grade B

Defensive line: The defensive line got beat this game especially on third and fourth down. The Ravens only sacked Drew Brees one time and allowed 134 yards rushing. Grade D

Linebackers: CJ Mosley was all over the place with 16 tackles he had a good game. The Linebackers were not the issue in this game but could have helped pressure Brees. Grade B

Secondary: Marlon Humphrey was out of the game and Jimmy Smith got the start. Smith admitted he got beat several times and had a few costly penalties. Overall, the secondary gave up timely catches. Brees only had eight incomplete passes. Grade D

Overall Defense: The Ravens defense could not get themselves off the field and did not give the offense many opportunities to score. The Ravens defense which usually forces a lot of three and outs and has a lot of sacks got beat. Grade D

Special Teams: Justin Tucker missed the first extra point of his career. Tucker was previously 222 out of 222…. Grade F

Coaching Staff: The Ravens coaching staff got surprised on an early fake punt and could not help the defense find answers to the Saints offense. The offense had a good game plan. Grade C
