Ravens OTA Depth Chart Analysis: Quarterbacks

With the Baltimore Ravens Organized Team Activities fully underway, I will be going through the Ravens position by position breaking down the depth and the competition. I will be categorizing players into one of three spots; locks to make the team, bubble players, and longshots.

Quarterbacks:

Locks: Joe Flacco(11th), Lamar Jackson(R)
No surprises here. Joe will be the starter for the Ravens for the 11th straight year and will have full control of the offense. While I will get to the skill positions later, this may be the best group of weapon’s Joe has had in his career. Look for Joe to get in rhythm with his guys now, so when they put the pads on they will hit the ground running.

An added wrinkle for Joe is the development of Lamar Jackson. Joe has not had anyone breathing down his back for his job, since like ever. According to CBS sports insider Jason La Canfora, he expects the Ravens to include Lamar in trick plays from the very beginning of the season. So, there is reason to believe that even if Joe is playing well, we should see some Lamar action this year.

Bubble: Robert Griffin III(6th)

This is an interesting situation. If Joe goes down or is not playing well the Ravens should be hesitant to throw Lamar into the fire. This is where Griffin would come in. The Ravens have not carried three Quarterbacks since 1999 and it is also important to remember Griffin was not on an NFL team last season. RG3 could also be a valuable mentor for Lamar and releasing him may take that away. (Bonus Fact: RG3 was born in Japan)

Long Shot: Josh Woodrum(2nd)
While John Harbaugh has said nice things about Josh in the past and he played well last preseason don’t expect the Ravens to keep this guy around barring injury. Any snaps this guy takes in the preseason are snaps being taken away from Lamar. The Ravens may try to sign him to the practice squad but with the Ravens QB of the future already on their roster don’t bet on it.
