Ravens ink Tavon Young to contract extension

The Baltimore Ravens will be holding a press conference tomorrow to announce that they have signed cornerback Tavon Young to a three-year, $25.8 million extension, with a max value of $29 million.

Young, a former 4th round draft pick, was entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2019. This extension will lock him up through the 2022 season.

With this extension, Young will become the the highest-paid nickel corner in the NFL with an average of $8.6 million per year. Young now edges out fellow nickel corner Aaron Colvin of the Houston Texans who’s APY is $8.5 million.

Young played in 15 games last season, starting six, finishing with 37 tackles, two sacks, five passes-defensed and one interception.

He also recovered three fumbles, returning two for touchdowns, including a very memorable one against the Chargers on December 22nd in Los Angeles.

Last season, Young was coming off of injury as he spent the entire 2017 season on IR with a torn ACL. Given his production last season, the Ravens are likely convinced that he’s fully-recovered.

The signing of younger talent before they hit free-agency marks a change of course for Baltimore, who, in the past, seemed reluctant to do so on many occasions.

New general manager Eric DeCosta is perhaps signaling that business will be done somewhat differently under his watch.

Now, the question remains, with this signing, what does the future hold for CB Jimmy Smith in the purple and black?
