Ravens end of season roster move roundup

The Baltimore Ravens made several roster transactions on Monday following their 17-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round of the 2020 playoffs on Saturday. They signed 11 young players to reserve/future contracts and waived four veteran players.

The four veterans that got let go are quarterback Robert Griffin III, cornerbacks Dwayne Harris and Tramon Williams, and wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas who opted out of the season.

Griffin has been with the team for the last three seasons and served as the backup to both Joe Flacco and then reigning league MVP Lamar Jackson since he became the starter midway through the 2018 season.

He has started one game in each of the last two seasons and has been an invaluable mentor of Jackson during his first three years in the league.

Harris and Williams joined the team at different times during the 2020 regular season after the secondary was hit hard by injuries throughout the year. They provided quality depth behind their top three corners and played admirably when called upon.

Here are the 11 players that were signed to reserve/future contracts in alphabetical order:

  • LB Aaron Adeoye
  • DT Aaron Crawford
  • DT Braxton Hoyett
  • QB Tyler Huntley
  • WR Jaylon Moore
  • LS Nick Moore
  • DE Chauncey Rivers
  • DB Nigel Warrior
  • DB Chris Westry
  • RB Ty’Son Williams
  • TE Eli Wolf

Huntley is the most significant signing of the crop after what he showed in limited action in relief duty in two of the final three regular-season games and as well as performance in the playoff loss to the Bills when he came in for a concussed Jackson operated the offense efficiently.

The undrafted free agent out of Utah finished his rookie season with 75 yards passing on nine completions and 55 yards rushing on 13 attempts in 48 offensive snaps including the postseason. Griffin’s release opens the door for Huntley to compete with second-year quarterback Trace McSorley to serve as Jackson’s primary backup in 2021.

Like Huntley, the vast majority of the players on the list are undrafted rookies. With four pending unrestricted free agents at the outside linebacker position, the Ravens might be looking to develop Adeoye and Rivers for larger roles next season since they’re unlikely to bring all of their veterans at the position back this offseason.

Adeoye, Crawford, Huntley, Jaylon Moore, Nick Moore, Rivers, Warrior, Williams, and Wolf all ended the year on the Baltimore’s practice squad and Hoyett spent the latter part of the season on the practice squad as well.

Westry has spent the first two years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted out of Kentucky in 2019. The 6-foot-4 safety spent his rookie year on injured reserve and most of this season on the practice squad.
