Ravens claim veteran OT Jake Rodgers off waivers

Not even a COVID outbreak couldn’t keep the Baltimore Ravens from adding some depth at the offensive tackle position by claiming six-year veteran Jake Rodgers off waivers on Wednesday.

The 29-year old journeyman has been on eight different teams since entering the league in 2015 as a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons out of Eastern Washington.

This will marks his second stint with the Ravens but first on the active roster since when they brought him on late in 2018 it was only on the practice squad.

Even though Rodgers has bounced around quite a bit in the first five years of his career, he didn’t receive any meaningful snaps in a regular-season game until these past two years. He appeared in a combined 19 games over the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos before he was waived on Tuesday.

The Ravens didn’t enter the season with much depth at offensive tackle to begin with following the opt-out of veteran Andre Smith.

Due to the season-ending injury to stalwart blindside protector Ronnie Stanley and the inconsistency of veteran DJ Fluker at right tackle after Orlando Brown flipped over to the left side, the team has had callup another career journeyman tackle in Will Holden in their last game to add some extra gameday insurance at the spot.

Holden ended up taking over for Fluker in the second half of their game against the Tennessee Titans and actually performed well in 30 offensive snaps.

Rodgers played in 51 offensive snaps for the Broncos against the Atlanta Falcons in Week Nine and even has a one career start under his belt that came in Week 17 last season. Holden has more starting experience and has played in more games but Rodgers has played more meaningful snaps this season.

Baltimore’s offensive line has been in an almost constant state of flux since Stanley and rookie Tyre Phillips went down in the first half of the same game.

Phillips was designated to return from injured reserve this week but the reprieve was short-lived following the placement of interior offensive Patrick Mekari and Matt Skura on the Reserve/COVID-19 List on Wednesday.
