Ravens CB Iman Marshall likely to miss 2020 season with major knee injury

Baltimore Ravens’ second-year cornerback Iman Marshall suffered a major knee injury on Sunday that could potentially cost him the entire 2020 season. In his virtual press conference on Monday Head Coach John Harbaugh said that Marshall’s injury was severe and will require surgery with no timetable for a return.

“Iman Marshall had a major knee injury yesterday, unfortunately,” Harbaugh said Monday. “He had been working hard and practicing well. Just came down on his right leg really awkwardly. He’s going to need major surgery. I believe it’s ACL, MCL.”

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport later reported that Marshall tore his ACL and several ligaments and will undergo season-ending surgery.

Marshall was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of USC and was entering his second season competing third-year pro Anthony Averett and others for one of the final roster spots on a loaded cornerback depth chart that features a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections in Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey as well as a pair of proven commodities in veteran corner Jimmy Smith and nickel back Tavon Young.

He spent the majority of his rookie season on injured reserve before he was activated to the 53-man roster off the designated to return list in early November. In the three games he appeared in, he logged just four snaps on defense to 43 on special teams and finished the year with just one solo tackle.

On a less serious injury-related front, Harbaugh also announced that veteran wide receiver and special teams ace Chris Moore suffered a broken finger and will miss some time, but it won’t threaten his availability for the upcoming season. He only caught three passes for 21 yards on just five targets in 2019 but is one of the best gunners in the league according to Special Teams Coordinator Chris Horton.

“It’s amazing, the same thing happened last year,” Harbaugh said. “Chris knows how to deal with that. He’ll be fine, but it will be a few weeks until that bone heals.”

Two other players that weren’t present at Monday’s practice were veteran nose tackle Brandon Williams and second-year outside linebacker Jaylon Ferguson but Harbaugh said that they’ll on miss a couple of days at the most.
