Prospect Profile: Mason McCoy

MLB.com released the preseason top 30 prospects list for the Baltimore Orioles last Monday. Over the next month I will be profiling each of those 30 players, and we start today with shortstop Mason McCoy.

McCoy was drafted in the sixth round (188th overall) from the University Of Iowa in the 2017 draft. McCoy spent his first two collegiate seasons at Illinois Central Community College before he transferred to Iowa.

McCoy was a standout player while in Junior College, racking up awards such as Freshman of the year and being named an All-American both seasons.

He continued his form in the summer while playing for the La Crosse Loggers of the North Woods League. In the summer 2015 season, McCoy was named the league MVP finishing the season with a league record 112 hits. He had another stellar season with the Loggers in 2016. He hit .320 in 65 games and was named MVP of the 2016 All-Star game.

McCoys numbers did not dip as he made the jump to Division One Baseball. He appeared in 117 games, starting all but one, in his two seasons in Iowa. In that time he hit .311 with 30 doubles 68 RBI and 92 runs scored.

After being drafted by the Orioles, McCoy was assigned to the Aberdeen IronBirds for the rest of the 2017 season. McCoy mad 48 starts at shortstop and appeared in 53 games overall. He was one of three IronBirds to hit over .300. In 186 at bats, McCoy had 54 hits for a .301 average and also collected 11 doubles and 29 RBI.

McCoy is a player who does not look like he will ever hit for power. The most home runs he has hit in a season is nine during the 2015 NWL season. The only season he did not hit .300 was his first season with the Hawkeyes when he hit .291.

One of McCoys biggest tools is his defense. MLB.com rates his defense at 60 (ratings range from 20-80) which is the highest of the 30 on the list and they rate his arm at 55.

A month away from turning 23, McCoy still has a good bit of development left before he makes it to Baltimore. MLB.com estimates his arrival to the Majors will happen in 2020.
