Prospect Profile: Cameron Bishop

Number 16 on the preseason top 30 prospects list for the Baltimore Orioles is Cameron Bishop. Fellow Lefty and 2017 draft pick Zac Lowther came in at number 17.

The Orioles selected Bishop out of the University of California Irvine in the 26th round of the 2017 draft. Bishop played two seasons with UC Irvine before a preseason injury cost him to miss the 2017 season. In his two seasons he had a 7-5 record with a 4.50 ERA and 108 strikeouts, over 45 games including 15 starts and 102 innings of work.

The Orioles waited until the very last minute to sign Bishop, and the deal almost did not go through. The Orioles sent the offer in five minutes past the signing deadline, but after investigation by the MLB the deal was accepted as a contract had been agreed upon before the deadline.

Bishop spent his first year dominating the New York Penn League. He had a 1-1 record in nine starts with Aberdeen IronBirds. He carried a stingy 0.78 ERA striking out 39 over 37.2 innings pitched.

MLB.com Analysis:

A 6-foot-4, 215-pound left-hander, Bishop can run his fastball up to 95 mph, albeit with little feel for where it’s going. He features a pair of breaking balls in a curveball and slider, both of which currently grade as fringe-average but stand to improve with experience. The same can be said for his changeup, too.

Bishop’s feel for pitching leaves quite a bit to be desired, as both his control and command grade out as below average. At the same time, he does have the raw components needed to start games at the next level, as well as the pure arm strength to become a late-inning reliever should that not work out.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45

MLB ETA: 2020
