Phillies put up 11 runs to beat Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles had a split-squad today as they faced the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, Florida. It was a pair of left-handers on the mound for both teams. The Orioles used the “opener” strategy, sending Paul Fry to the mound to begin the game. The Phillies sent Cole Irvin, who is likely to start the season in Triple-A.

Cole Irvin looked a little wild in the first. He had a little trouble finding the strike zone, and the Orioles took advantage to that. Cedric Mullins drew a leadoff walk to open the game. Later in the inning, Ryan Mountcastle singled up the middle, and Mullins advanced from first to third. Drew Jackson would then give Baltimore the early lead with a RBI single. Irvin would eventually go four innings giving up just one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.

Paul Fry- Orioles relief pitcher

Paul Fry began the bottom of the first with Andrew McCutchen reaching on a fielding error and Jean Segura tapping an infield single. Fry then struck out the newest Phillie, Bryce Harper, to get the first out. He then gave up a RBI single to Maikel Franco. Fry would escape the inning, getting the final two outs with no further damage. An error by Rio Ruiz in the bottom of the second would give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Fry pitched very well in his first “opener” outing, going one and two-thirds innings while giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.

Luis Gonzalez would come on in relief for Baltimore, but the Phillies would gain another run in the bottom of the third off of a RBI triple by Scott Kingery. Gonzalez went an inning and a third giving up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Gabriel Ynoa would take the mound in the fourth. The Phillies would load the bases with only one out. Odubel Herrera would add on two more runs for Philadelphia with a two RBI single. After the single, Cesar Hernandez would line out to right field to end the inning.

Renato Nunez- Orioles third baseman

Renato Nunez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning off of David Robertson to give the Orioles their second run. But in the bottom of the fifth, Aaron Altherr would get the run back for the Phillies with a solo shot to left-center off of Ynoa.

Carlos Perez hit a solo home run off of Juan Nicasio to begin the top of the sixth inning. Gabriel Ynoa would came back out in the bottom half of the inning. He would give up a leadoff double to Maikel Franco and then Odubel Herrera would strike again with a 2-run home run, giving Philadelphia a 8-3 lead. Ynoa’s day would be done after going two and one-thirds innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Josh Lucas would come in relief of Ynoa. He would give up one run before ending the inning, giving the Phillies a 10-3 lead going into the seventh inning.

Josh Rogers pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Baltimore. He gave up one earned run on two hits. Josh Martin came in the top of the ninth to finish the game for the Phillies. Preston Palmeiro hit a solo shot off of Martin to give Baltimore their fourth run on the day. But after that, Martin would end the game for the Phillies, giving them an11-4 win over Baltimore.
