Ravens trade for Zuttah

Jeremy Zuttah.jpgThe Baltimore Ravens have traded for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Jeremy Zuttah. The Ravens will give up a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft for Zuttah.  As I wrote this week the Ravens needed to upgrade their center position and Zuttah does that.

Zuttah will also get a new long-term deal with the Ravens that will lower his salary cap number, details of the deal have yet to be announced.  Zuttah still needs to pass his physical for the deal to be completed.  Zuttah was a third-round draft in the 2008 NFL draft and has started 76 out of 90 games, all with the Buccaneers.

Orioles claim INF David Adams off waivers, DFA De La Cruz

David Adams on May 20, 2013.jpgThe Baltimore Orioles have claimed infielder David Adams off waivers from the Cleveland Indians and have designated pitcher Kevin De La Cruz for assignment.  I always saw De La Cruz as a minor league depth kind of pitcher and did not expect him to make the Orioles opening day roster.

Adams is a very good fielder and has had success with his bat at the minor league level.  The Orioles infielders have played well this spring but with Manny Machado still ailing adding another good fielder can not hurt.

At this point I see Adams as a long shot to make the Orioles opening day roster.

Here is the Orioles press release on Adams.

Capitals sign Caleb Herbert

The Washington Capitals have announced that they have signed center Caleb Herbert to a two-year entry-level contract.  Herbert was drafted back in 2010 in the fifth round of the draft.  Herbert has been spending the past three seasons playing college hockey at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Herbert will report to the Hershey Bears.

Ravens agree to terms with safety Stewart

225px-Darian_StewartThe Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms with safety Darian Stewart to a one-year deal.  Stewart was an undrafted free agent in 2010 and has seen action with the St. Louis Rams.

Stewart has starting experience and will add depth to the Ravens secondary.  The Ravens need to find a starting free safety and Stewart could fill that roll but he has played mostly at strong safety.  I think the Ravens will try to fill the free safety position in the NFL draft.

Here is the Ravens press release on Stewart.

Orioles sign Ayala

517px-Luis_Ayala_on_April_24,_2012The Baltimore Orioles have signed pitcher Luis Ayala to a split contract, according to Roch Kobatko. The Washington Nationals recently released Ayala. Ayala pitched for the Orioles in 2012 and posted a 5-5 record with a 2.64 era. Ayala also pitched in two games for the Orioles last season before being traded to the Atlanta Braves.

Ayala is 36 years old and pitches out of the bullpen, he will likely provide depth for the Orioles at the minor league level. Ayala fastball has been a concern but he never lit up the radar gun and rarely hits above 90 mph.

Orioles option Yoon and Monell, re-assign Paul

The Baltimore Orioles have optioned Suk-Min Yoon and Johnny Monell to AAA Norfolk.  The Orioles have also re-assigned Xavier Paul to minor league camp.

Yoon signed a three-year deal with the Orioles earlier this offseason had trouble getting into the United States.  Yoon will be able to get more innings in at the minor league level, the Orioles look at him as a starter or reliever.  The Orioles view Yoon as a Major League quality pitcher.
