With the Capitals legend Rod Langway, better known as the “Secretary of Defense” in attendance for the second scrimmage, 18 year old Jakub Vrana, was the most impressive. Vrana, who has been lined up with last years Caps first round draft pick Andre Burakovsky, have been a pleasure to watch. A duo that could be paired up together in the NHL in the next few years has so far, wowed Caps fans in attendance at this years Development Camp.
Today was the first intrasquad scrimmage of the Washington Capitals Development Camp and a couple players stood out. Most surprisingly, Michal Cajkovsky.
The Baltimore Orioles have optioned Bud Norris and recalled Preston Guilmet from triple-A Norfolk. Norris is coming off an injury and has to get some game action. Norris showed obvious rust last night while starting.
Guilmet will be available out of the bullpen and has pitched well at times for the Orioles.
My favorite part about covering the Delmarva Shorebirds is not writing about top prospects. Yes, it is important for the fanbase to hear about Hunter Harvey and Chance Sisco, but it is also important to look for prospects who may fly under the radar. It is fun to see guys like Austin Wynns and Sebastian Vader who have had success despite not being top prospects. Another prospect who is flying under the radar is RHP Garrett Cortright.
The Orioles selected Cortright in the 40th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He attended Canisius in New York, where he pitched for 3 years. During his junior year at Canisius, Cortright went 11-4 with a 2.41 ERA. He led his team to the NCAA Tournament before the O’s took him in the draft. Cortright signed, and the O’s assigned him to their Gulf Coast League affiliate. Read more about The Success of Garrett Cortright …
The Baltimore Orioles play the Washington Nationals in the final game of the battle of the beltway series. The Nationals beat the Orioles six to two last night and the series is tied. There will be a makeup game August 4th.
Here is the Orioles lineup.
The Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals play today in the Battle of the Beltways, it is the second game of the series after last nights game was postponed. I expect Bud Norris to be a little rusty today with the off day yesterday. The Orioles and Nationals will be playing in Camden Yards with American League rules so the DH will play. The Orioles really needed an off day after all the extra innings that they have played.
The Nats will be sending Doug Fister to the mound, he is having another great season.
