Gausman was slated to be called up to the Orioles on Friday to help in the bullpen after Thursday’s double header against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Friday was supposed to be Gausman’s day to pitch in the rotation. According to the Norfolk Tides Twitter account, Gausman will be placed on the disabled list, retro 4/30, to make room for infielder Steve Lombardozzi on the roster.

Missed the Crow's big hit/Two game sweep of Pittsburgh

Of course we have played the Pittsburgh Pirates before. Had a 2-0 lead in the 1971 World Series and lost it in seven. It was a similar tale in 1979 when the Orioles blew a 3 games to 1 lead. Oh that hurt. So here’s a short story in my upcoming book, “Tales from Orioles Nation.”

Kind of funny that I got a full apology nearly 30 years later. It’s the 1979 World Series and I’m alone in my Georgetown DC house. The roommates are gone and of course the wonderful Orioles are on television facing the evil Pirates and we are trailing 6-3 heading to the eighth inning of game four in Pittsburgh. But the O’s are threatening and Pittsburgh is forced to bring in ace reliever Kent Tekulve.

Orioles option Meek recall Brach

The Baltimore Orioles have optioned pitcher Evan Meek to triple-A Norfolk and are going to recall pitcher Brad Brach from Norfolk. The Orioles taxed their bullpen yesterday while playing a double-header and need a fresh arm.

Meek started the season off pitching strong but lately he has struggled and his era has rose to 6.94, which is not good. Brach has not pitched that great in Norfolk but he will give the Orioles an extra arm. Brach has a 4.85 era while pitching in 12 games for the Tides.

Here is the Orioles press release on Meek.

By the end of the second round, our perception on who should be hoisting the Cup by postseasons end should begin to solidify itself.

Capitals trade Halak for fourth-round pick

The Washington Capitals have traded Jarolav Halak to the New York Islanders for a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft.  Halak was acquired earlier this season in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres.

Halak had a 29-13-7 record in 52 games with the Capitals.  Halak put up good numbers but it seemed like his heart was not in it for the Capitals.  The Capitals still need to improve their goal tending and defense if they want to get back in the playoffs next season.  Having more picks will help the Capitals rebuild.

Here is the Capitals press release.
