O’s surrender five home runs for second straight game in 8-5 loss to Oakland

Baltimore — The Oakland A’s continued their offensive onslaught Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, launching five home runs for the second consecutive game, downing the Orioles, 8-5.

With the win, Oakland captured the four game series, winning their third game in a row against the Birds.

Things started off well for the Orioles, when left fielder Dwight Smith hit a solo home run to right in the bottom of the 1st off A’s starter Aaron Brooks (W, 2-1).

Brooks, though would settle down, allowing just one hit and two walks over the next five innings.

Orioles starter Dylan Bundy (L, 0-1) navigated once through the Oakland lineup without any trouble, but the home run ball appeared in the top of the 4th.

With shortstop Marcus Semien on second, Bundy surrendered a one-out homer to designated hitter Khris Davis, giving Oakland a 2-1 lead.

Two batters into the top of the 5th Oakland grabbed a 4-1 lead when catcher Josh Phegley smoked a two-run shot off Bundy into the left-center field seats.

Bundy served up two more home runs to the first two batters in the top of the 6th. Khris Davis hit his fourth home run in two games to lead off the inning and he was followed by first baseman Kendrys Morales.

Bundy was relived by right handed pitcher Josh Lucas, who was recalled earlier in the day, trailing 6-1.

Lucas was greeted with a hard single by third baseman Chad Pinder that was misplayed by center fielder Cedric Mullins, allowing Pinder to advance to third.

Pinder scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Jurickson Profar, extending the lead to 7-1.

Baltimore would rally in the bottom of the 7th. Third baseman Rio Ruiz walked and designated hitter Renato Nunez singled to chase Brooks.

Oakland right hander J.B. Wendelken then walked first baseman Chris Davis, loading the bases. Up stepped catcher Pedro Severino, who collected an RBI the hard way, by getting hit in the batting helmet.

Wendelken was removed by Oakland manager Bob Melvin for right hander Lou Trevino. Trevino induced a pop out off the bat of shortstop Richie Martin, but then uncorked a wild pitch, plating Nunez and moving runners to second and third. The O’s now trailed by four.

Mullins would bring in a run on a ground out to first base and Smith doubled to cut the Oakland lead to 7-5.

Orioles second baseman Jonathan Villar threatened to cut the lead to one by hitting a sinking line drive to right field, but Stephen Piscotty made an outstanding catch to end the inning.

Semien wrapped up the scoring by blasting a solo home run in the top of 9th off right hander Mychal Givens.

The Orioles are now 5-8 on the young season.

Chris Davis failed to get a hit again today, extending his major league record hitless streak to 53 at-bats and 61 plate-appearances.

Baltimore travels to Fenway Park to begin a four game series Friday night against the Red Sox. The Orioles will send David Hess (1-1, 2.70) to mound for game one, he will be opposed by Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 12.38).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm.
