Orioles trade Gausman and O’Day to Braves

The Baltimore Orioles have traded Kevin Gausman and Darren O’Day to the Atlanta Braves, according to John Heyman.  Details of the deal are not yet known but it should be clearer soon.  The Orioles orginially drafted Gausman with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft.

The non waiver trade deadline is today so a lot of late deals are starting to come through.  The Braves have a loaded farm system so it could be a decent return.

Gausman is a very talented pitcher with top three pitcher stuff.  Gausman has not yet had a full consistant year but has put it together in stretches.  Gausman was having a decent year 4.43 era this season and a 4.22 career era.

Gausman is under control until the 2021 season so the Braves will have him for two more seasons.  I think this was a bad idea to trade a talented pitcher under team control but hopefully the returns are good.

We will update this story as we find out more.

Update 7/31/18 4:16 pm – The players in the deal from the Braves are Encarnacion, Cumberland, Phillips and Zimmerman to the Orioles for Gausman and Darren O’Day.
