Orioles staff Minor Leagues

The Baltimore Orioles have staffed their Minor League teams with eight coaches, managers and staff members. The most notable name on this list is Ron Johnson who has been the manager for the Norfolk Tides for the past three seasons.

Orioles name Minor League managers, coaches and staff

The Orioles today announced the coaching staffs for their eight minor league affiliates for the 2014 season.

RON JOHNSON returns for his third season as the manager at Triple-A Norfolk after guiding the Tides to a 77-67 mark in 2013. The 2014 season will be Johnson’s 21st as a minor league manager and he is sixth among active minor league managers with 1,412 career victories (1,412-1,399 overall). MIKE GRIFFIN will serve as pitching coach for the seventh consecutive season in the organization and fifth straight season in Norfolk. DENNY WALLING will serve as hitting coach for the Tides for the third consecutive season. Former major leaguer JOSE HERNANDEZ will serve as field coach for Norfolk for the second straight season and his fifth year in the organization. MARK SHIRES enters his 15th year as an athletic trainer in the Orioles’ system and his eighth year at Norfolk. RYO NAITO will return for his fourth season as the Tides’ strength and conditioning coach.

GARY KENDALL will return for his fourth season as manager at Double-A Bowie. 2014 will be Kendall’s 15th season in the organization and 11th season as a manager. Entering his ninth year in the Orioles organization (six with Frederick and one with Delmarva), BLAINE BEATTY will return for his second year as pitching coach for the Baysox. In his 20th season in the Orioles organization, BUTCH DAVIS returns as the field coach for Bowie. AARON SCOTT, in his 12th season in the organization, will serve as Bowie’s athletic trainer for the fourth consecutive year. Strength and conditioning coach PAT ARMSTRONG returns for his fourth year in the organization and third year at Bowie.

Long-time major league coach LUIS PUJOLS will manage the Frederick Keys in 2014 after managing the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2013. KENNIE STEENSTRA returns for his third season with the Keys and his 10th in the organization. TORRE TYSON returns for his second year as the hitting coach for the Keys. PAT WESLEY begins his 11th full season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles’ organization and sixth with Frederick. CHRIS CECERE will serve as strength and conditioning coach for the Keys in his third year in the organization.

Former Orioles third baseman RYAN MINOR, who managed Delmarva from 2010-12, will return to manage the Shorebirds after piloting the Keys in 2013. The 2014 season will be Minor’s seventh as a coach or manager in the Orioles organization. Former Oriole ALAN MILLS moves from Aberdeen to Delmarva in his third season as a pitching coach in the organization. Former Orioles farmhand PACO FIGUEROA will serve as the Shorebirds’ field coach in his first year as a professional coach. TREK SCHULER returns to the Shorebirds, where he spent the 2001-03 seasons, for his 15th season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles organization. TREVOR HOWELL will return for his second season as strength and conditioning coach for Delmarva.

After leading Aberdeen to the playoffs in his first year in the organization, MATT MERULLO returns to manage the IronBirds in 2014. Merullo will be joined by pitching coach JUSTIN LORD, who spent the 2013 season with Delmarva. CHRIS POOLE will move from Gulf Coast to serve as athletic trainer for the IronBirds and KEVIN CLARK will serve as strength and conditioning coach.

ORLANDO GOMEZ will manage the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles for a second straight year and his 10th in the organization (eighth as a manager). RAMON SAMBO returns as the team’s field coach and MILT MAY returns for his fifth season as hitting coach for the GCL Orioles. Former major leaguer WILSON ALVAREZ returns for a second season as pitching coach for the GCL Orioles. GREG SVARCZKOPF will serve as the athletic trainer for the GCL Orioles.

ELVIS MOREL and NELSON NORMAN will manage the Orioles’ two entries in the Dominican Summer League. They will be assisted by pitching coaches ROBERT PEREZ and DIONIS PASCUAL and coaches BENNY ADAMES (hitting), RAMON CARABALLO (field supervisor), RAMON LUBO (catching) and RUBEN FRANCISCO (field coach). LUDOVINO MARTE will serve as athletic trainer for the DSL club.

BRIAN GRAHAM enters his seventh season with the Orioles and second as Director of Player Development. RICK PETERSON will return for his third season as Director of Pitching Development and JEFF MANTO joins the organization for his first year as Minor League Hitting Coordinator.

Orioles Hall of Famer MIKE BORDICK will serve as a Special Assignment Instructor, while DON WERNER (catching), DAVE ANDERSON (infield) and SCOTT BEERER (outfield and baserunning) will serve as roving instructors. SCOTT MCGREGOR will spend his 13th year as a coach in the organization and third season as the Sarasota-based Rehabilitation Coordinator. DAVE SCHMIDT, in his 17th season in the organization, will serve as the Florida and Latin America Pitching Administrator for the Orioles. In addition to his managerial duties, NELSON NORMAN remains the Director of Dominican Baseball Operations for the Birds, while FELIPE ALOU, JR. returns for his seventh year as Coordinator of Dominican Operations. LEN JOHNSTON enters his 38th season with the Orioles organization, serving as the Administrator for Sarasota Operations. DAVE WALKER will begin his 12th year as Minor League Medical Coordinator and 21st season in the Orioles’ farm system. RYAN CROTIN, who previously served as a consultant for the club, joins the organization full-time as Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, while RYAN DRISCOLL returns for his fifth year as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Sarasota. JAKE PARKER returns for his fifth season as Minor League Equipment Manager.
