Orioles return Rule 5 pick Jose Mesa Jr. to Yankees

The Baltimore Orioles announced that Rule 5 pick Jose Mesa Jr. has been returned to the Yankees organization, he’ll report to Triple-A.

The 24-year-old righty cleared waivers after not making the Orioles opening day roster and has the ability to return to the Yankees, who drafted him in the 24th round in 2012 draft. Mesa didn’t produce well this spring, but his potential is still in tact consider his previous years in the minors. Last year, he produced a 1.93ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 84 innings over 29 appearances.

Baltimore considered the righty to fill a spot in the 2018 bullpen, fighting with two other Rule 5 pitchers Mesa lost the battle and now he’ll wait for the chance to get the call to New York.
