Orioles option Gausman

200px-Kevin_Gausman_(cropped)The Baltimore Orioles have optioned Kevin Gausman and have purchased the contract of Julio DePaula.  The Orioles have optioned Kevin Gausman several times this season despite the fact that he has pitched extremely well.  The Orioles are managing Gausman’s innings for a late season push and hopefully playoffs.

DePaula is a veteran minor league pitcher who will likely only be used if the Orioles have a long game.  DePaula is over 30 and was pitching in independent baseball and double-A Bowie before being recalled.  DePaula has a 0.00 era at Bowie in 6.1 innings pitched, very small sample size.

Here is the Orioles press release.

Orioles select contract of RHP Julio DePaula from Double-A Bowie; RHP Kevin Gausman optioned to Triple-A Norfolk

The Orioles today announced that they have selected the contract of RHP JULIO DePAULA from Double-A Bowie and optioned RHP KEVIN GAUSMAN to Triple-A Norfolk.

DePaula, 31, has not allowed a run in three appearances with the Baysox (6.1IP, 3H, 3BB, 8K) after being signed by the Orioles organization on June 27 from the independent York Revolution. He has pitched to a 3.62 ERA (916.1IP, 369ER) in 13 minor league seasons in the Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Baltimore systems. Originally signed by Minnesota as an amateur free agent on July 10, 1999, DePaula appeared in 16 major league games in 2007, posting an 8.55 ERA (20.0IP, 19ER) with the Twins. DePaula also pitched for Hanwha in the KBO in 2010 and 2011. He will wear #59.

Gausman, 23, is 3-2 with a 3.51 ERA (33.1IP, 13ER) in six starts for the Orioles this season.
