Orioles Minor Leaguer of the Week: Zach Davies

Bowie Baysox pitcher Zach Davies had an outstanding week for the double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Davies, a 21-year-old out of Gilbert, Arizona, threw 13 innings during the week, while allowing only 3 hits, 0 ER, 4 walks, and striking out 7 batters. The right-handed starter also picked up two wins in the two starts that he made in the week.

Davies has been climbing Baseball America’s Orioles prospect rankings every year he has been with the organization. According to the magazine, the righty has gone from being the #31 ranked O’s prospect following the 2011 season, to the #11 ranked phenom in the organization prior to the start of the current season.

Although Davies is just 21-years-old, the lanky starter has progressed well during his time in the minors over the last three seasons. The Arizona native has gone from Delmarva, to Frederick, to Bowie throughout these three seasons, and has improved his K’s per nine innings pitched ratio every season.

The standout performances over his last two starts earned Davies the Eastern League’s Pitcher of the Week honors. Davies is 3-4, with a 4.24 ERA and 39 K’s in 40 1/3 innings so far this season with the Baysox.
