Orioles Minor Leaguer of the Week: Alexi Casilla

While Norfolk Tides infielder Alexi Casilla may not be a “prospect” anymore, the 29-year-old is still producing at the Triple-A level. Casilla hit .563 (9 for 16), had five runs scored, one double, one RBI, and one stolen base in four games for the Tides last week.

Casilla is no stranger to Baltimore Orioles fans, as the middle infielder featured in 62 games for the Orioles during the 2013 season. Although the Dominican only hit .214 on the season for the O’s, Casilla is usually known for his defense. Casilla did not record an error in 170 chances in the field last season (169 of them at second base).

The Los Angeles Angels signed Casilla as a non-drafted free agent way back in February of 2003. Casilla was dealt to the Minnesota Twins for pitcher J.C. Romero two years later in 2005. After making his major league debut in 2006, Casilla enjoyed seven seasons in the Twins organization before being picked up off of waivers by the Orioles in November of 2012.

The sure-handed Casilla is hitting .292, with 14 runs, 4 doubles, 8 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases in 27 games so far this season for the Tides.

Other Orioles minor league hitters that enjoyed a good week last week are: Last week’s minor league player of the week Glynn Davis (.296 batting average, 6 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 stolen bases), Nuiman Romero (.320 batting average, 6 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 stolen base), Sharlon Schoop (.280 batting average, 4 runs, 2 doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBIs), Steve Lombardozzi (.322 batting average, 4 runs, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, 1 SB), Ivan De Jesus (.345 batting average, 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBIs), and Brett Wallace (.400 batting average, 2 runs, 3 RBIs).
