Orioles Minor League Player of the Week: Tyler Wilson

Bowie Baysox starting pitcher Tyler Wilson performed extremely well during his two appearances for the double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles last week. Wilson started 2 games (and won both of them), throwing 14 innings, giving up 9 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and striking out 13 batters.

The former University of Virginia standout was a 10th round pick for the Birds in 2011. Wilson ranks 4th in school history in pitching appearances, 2nd in wins, 9th in winning percentage, 10th in innings pitched, and 4th in strikeouts.

While Wilson may not throw particularly hard, he has excellent command and finds ways to get hitters out. In his last 34 innings pitched, Wilson has only issued 4 walks (while striking out 28 batters).

The Richmond, Virginia native was previously ranked by Baseball America as the #26 ranked Orioles prospect following the 2012 season, and was hailed as possessing the best control out of all of the Orioles minor league pitchers the same year.

Wilson is 10-5, with a 3.72 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings pitched so far on the season for Bowie. The 24-year-old’s strikeout-to-walk ratio is also an impressive 4.14 during the 2014 season.

(Side note: I usually do not include player stats from the Aberdeen Ironbirds; however, prospect Dylan Bundy had another solid start last Friday. Bundy threw 5 innings, gave up 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 7 batters).
