Orioles Lose to Yankees 5-3 Fall to 11-11-2 on the Spring

Mike Wright got the start today at Ed Smith Stadium and went five innings giving up four runs while striking out two as the Orioles fell to the Yankees split squad Sunday afternoon. Wright gave up three home runs, which obviously did not help in his bid to make the starting rotation. “Obviously, today sucks, giving up three home runs and giving up all those hits”, Wright stated after the game.   Wright gave up eight hits in his five innings of work in front of the largest crowd of the spring for the Orioles at just over 7,800. As of now, Wright is the favorite for the fifth spot in the rotation, but may work out of the bullpen at the beginning of the year as the Orioles will not need a fifth starter for the first couple of weeks.

On a day in which their best offensive player of the spring, Austin Hays, was cut from the big league squad, the Orioles struggled offensively through the first seven innings. Finally, in the eighth inning, catcher Carlos Pérez hit a solo home run, then Jace Peterson singled and scored on a base-hit by Chris Davis. The Orioles are back in action on Tuesday at 1:05 agains the Minnesota Twins at Edward Smith Stadium.
