Orioles GM Search Update

Hey everybody! It is slowly becoming a clearer picture about who will become the new GM in Baltimore. News that broke this morning has said that the LA Angels of Anaheim will be hiring Jerry DiPoto to be their GM. You may be thinking to yourself, how does that relate to the Birds? Well, if you recall, Jerry DiPoto was on the Orioles list of candidates for our open position as well. DiPoto interviewed with the Orioles, as did Tony LaCava (from Toronto), De Jon Watson (assistant to the Dodgers GM), and our own John Stockstill (current director of player development).

With the news of DiPoto heading to LA of Anaheim, the Orioles are now “very likely” to hire Tony LaCava. Here’s a bit of a bio for LaCava. He is currently the Blue Jays VP of Baseball Operations and Assistant GM. He also deals with anything regarding Latin America for the team, an area where the Orioles desperately need help. LaCava is also said to be well-connected in MLB circles. The Blue Jays presently have one of the best young farm systems in baseball, under LaCava and the GM, Alex Anthopoulos. Furthermore, LaCava, who started as a scout, has worked for multiple franchises and worked his way up through the ranks.

If this potential hiring is indeed true, I stand behind it. We need a fresh face to lead the front office of this organization. Tony LaCava does take advanced metrics like BABIP (batting average on balls in play) into account when he examines players. Each GM has their own ways of determining players for a fit in a particular organization, but if the Jays minor leagues are any indication, we should be in store for some better drafting and hopefully more international players moving forward.

As this is strictly an update, LaCava’s hiring is by no means a certainty. When more information comes to the forefront, I will have more updates for you. Needless to say, out of the remaining candidates that I have researched, I think this is the most logical fit for our team as currently constructed. Stay tuned to the MSB as this story continues to unfold.
