Orioles get routed and swept by the Yankees 15-3

David Hess couldn’t recapture the magic of his season-opening performance and the bullpen (and an infielder) continued to struggle as the Baltimore Orioles lost big 15-3 to get swept by the New York Yankees in their first home series of the season. The Yankees hit seven home runs, three by Gary Sanchez and two by Clint Frazier, that accounted for twelve of the Yankees fifteen runs. As a point of reference, there are seven Major League teams that do not yet have seven home runs on the season.

The Orioles pitching struggle throughout the game. David Hess, who looked brilliant in his first start against the Blue Jays, went five innings, giving up four runs while striking out two. Mike Wright relieved Hess and continued his atrocious season giving up giving up four runs in 1.2 innings to bring his season ERA up to a bloated 18.69. New signee Dan Straily fared even worse giving up five runs in just 1.1 innings pitched, including serving up two home runs. Utility infielder, Hanser Alberto came on to pitch the ninth inning, becoming the most effective reliever on the day, giving up two runs. \

At the plate, the Orioles were no-hit into the sixth inning by Yankees starter Domingo German. Jonathan Villar and pitching infielder Hanser Alberto went two for four and Alberto added the Orioles’ lone RBI on the day (the other two runs were scored on a passed ball and wild pitch.) The Chris Davis watch continued as the once-dangerous slugger is 0-23 on the season and 0 for his last 44 dating back to last year. He is two shy of matching the record for a position player for most consecutive at-bats without a hit.

The Orioles welcome the 6-6 Oakland Athletics into town tomorrow as Andrew Cashner takes on Marco Estrada.
