Orioles fall to Red Sox 8-5: Game recap 5/7/19

David Hess got the start tonight for the Orioles, and his home run woes came early in this one.

Red Sox slugger, J.D. Martinez, sent Hess deep in the first, giving the Red Sox a quick 2-0 lead.

Rio Ruiz answered in the bottom of the first, smashing a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. This was his third of the season.

Following another home run by Boston shortstop, Xander Boegarts, in the fourth, Hanser Alberto answered with a solo home run of his own, once again tying the game at 3-3.

Branden Kline came in relief to start the fifth, and the Red Sox offense got after him immediately. Following a wild pitch and a walk, Mitch Moreland of the Red Sox sent Kline deep to extend the Orioles deficit to 6-3.

In the eighth inning, the Orioles had life, cutting the lead to 6-5 from a run-scoring double by Dwight Smith Jr. and a RBI single off the bat of the newly rejuvenated Chris Davis.

The Red Sox would put the game out of reach in the ninth, when Evan Phillips came on and gave up a bases loaded walk. Miguel Castro was brought on with still no outs and the bases loaded. He would give up a sac fly, then retire the next three hitters in order.

The Orioles sparked late but faltered in a 8-5 loss. Branden Kline received the loss (1-1).

The Birds host the Red Sox Wednesday for game three at 7:05 pm.
